The complete text of Stevenson's "Requiem" is:

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you grave for me,
Here he lies where he longed to be.
Home is the sailor home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

In any case Mark G has had engraved a mixture of Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Requiem' and Alfred Edward Housman's 'Home Is The Sailor'. The first line is from Housman and the last line from Stevenson.
I will leave it to loki to work out which came first.

I had an Australian cattle dog. They are not a typical breed. But unlike some humans, every kind gesture and nice thing you do for a dog is deeply appreciated as it is received. On behalf of dogs lovers everywhere, thank you for what you did for Gypsy and for sharing.

Mark...a very touching story. My condolences. I am still in pain over some of my pets I lost years ago. But I think that your dedication to shelter volunteerism and your adoption/fostering make you beloved by dogs and dog lovers everywhere.

Robert L. Stevenson was a poet. It is the ultimate sharing, and this man who found appropriate words from another to express his sentiments deserves better than a sophomoric response to his post. It is about the loss of a father, not a literary philosophy. Post no more, and let this man find his own way through his great loss. I have lost many, in sickness and in war. Bless this man and his father in eternity. Let this lie. And Rest.

Thanks for the links. You guessed correctly: I'm in my late 40s.

The better place to keep track of my BJJ-related blogging [BJJ = Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, for the uninitiated] is my professional blog. It's more frequently updated.

I'm guessing by the "some 40 years ago" comment, you might appreciate this, if you haven't seen it already:

http://www.royharris.com/corner/?sec=42&id=1076

Randomly stumbled onto your blog because I noticed a link back to mine in your blogroll, which confused me at first. ;)

I look forward to further 'Combat as Metaphor' entries - always great to see more BJJ blogging! :D
